Online fitness coaching gives you the opportunity to work with a coach without being limited by your location, gym or schedule.
For me, that flexibility is one of the biggest advantages of online coaching.
My clients do not have to build their lives around the limited availability of a personal trainer. I try to build the coaching around their lifestyle, work, family and schedule instead.
But good online coaching should be much more than receiving a workout plan by email.
It should combine training, nutrition, accountability, regular communication and a system that you can realistically maintain.
How Does Online Fitness Coaching Work?
The first thing I focus on is understanding the person.
Your programme should be built around your lifestyle, not around a generic template.
Nutrition is a perfect example.
I don't believe the long-term answer is spending the rest of your life entering every piece of food into a calorie-tracking app.
I prefer keeping nutrition simple.
Whole foods. Normal meals. Foods you actually enjoy. The right quantities for your body and your goal.
You should be able to follow your nutrition without feeling as though your entire life revolves around dieting.
Your Training Should Be Personalised Too
Training should not simply be a random circuit designed to make you sweat.
I prefer structured resistance training where we actually work on developing the major muscle groups chest, back, shoulders, arms and legs.
For many people, three well-structured strength-training sessions per week can be enough.
You don't need to become somebody who lives in the gym.
The goal is to become stronger, fitter and build a physique that you are proud of while still having a career, family and normal life.
What Do My Online Coaching Clients Get?
My approach includes much more than giving somebody a plan and saying, “Follow this.”
Depending on the person, we work on:
- personalised nutrition
- a structured training programme
- regular progress tracking
- body weight and measurement tracking
- weekly calls
- mindset and accountability
- ongoing communication
- changes to the programme when necessary
The programme should evolve as you evolve.
If something stops working, we investigate why and adjust it.
You shouldn't receive one programme at the beginning of coaching and still be following exactly the same thing months later regardless of your progress.
Who Is Online Fitness Coaching For?
My coaching works particularly well for people who want somebody beside them during their transformation.
Sometimes information isn't the problem.
People already know they should exercise and eat better.
What they are missing is somebody who gives them direction, answers questions, keeps them accountable and helps them get back on track when motivation drops.
It can also be particularly useful for busy people who need flexibility.
Instead of being told that your only available training session is at 6 AM or 9 PM, online coaching allows the programme to work around your schedule.
In my own coaching, I try to be flexible with clients, including communication and support across the week and weekends when required.
Online Fitness Coach vs Personal Trainer
A traditional personal trainer can be excellent.
The biggest limitation is usually time.
A personal trainer has a fixed number of hours available each week, and popular training times often fill quickly.
Online coaching gives us considerably more flexibility.
Another difference is that our relationship isn't limited to the hour when you are standing beside me in a gym.
We can work on your nutrition, training, habits, mindset, progress and problems throughout the entire week.
Online coaching can also often be more affordable than frequent one-to-one personal training, especially when you compare the amount of ongoing support included.
Why Do So Many People Fail to Lose Weight Alone?
One of the biggest mistakes I see is going too extreme.
People dramatically reduce their food, remove almost all carbohydrates, train constantly and try to force themselves through the process with willpower.
It works for a short period.
Then hunger increases.
Energy drops.
They start overeating in the evening or at weekends and eventually return to their previous habits.
I prefer the middle ground.
Consistent and sustainable beats extreme and temporary.
I'd rather see somebody make steady progress for months and keep the result than lose weight very quickly and regain it afterwards.
What Makes a Good Online Fitness Coach?
For me, it comes down to how much the coach actually cares about the client's result.
My clients represent my work.
I don't want somebody to pay me and then hear from me every few days when I happen to have time.
A good coach should communicate, pay attention to progress, provide feedback and actually be present when the client needs help.
Regular calls are also important to me.
Sometimes that weekly conversation is exactly what somebody needs to regain focus and attack the next week properly.
A good coach doesn't simply hand you a programme.
They coach you through the programme.
How Much Does Online Fitness Coaching Cost?
There isn't one universal price.
The cost depends on the coach, the amount of personalisation, how frequently you communicate, whether nutrition is included, how often programmes are adjusted and the overall level of support provided.
Longer coaching programmes can also sometimes reduce the average monthly cost.
Instead of comparing coaching only by price, I would look at what support you are actually receiving for that price.
Is an Online Fitness Coach Worth It?
I believe good online coaching can absolutely be worth it for the right person.
You're not simply paying for a workout.
You're paying for structure, accountability, nutrition guidance, training, communication, adjustments and somebody helping you solve problems as they happen.
Most importantly, my goal isn't simply to help somebody lose weight.
I want them to understand how to keep the physique they worked for.
Losing weight is only part of the transformation.
Keeping the result is what makes it successful.
