How to Lose Weight: What Actually Works for Long-Term Results

Losing weight is not just about eating fewer calories.

Yes, you need a calorie deficit to lose body fat, but how that deficit is set up matters just as much if you want to stick to it long term.

If your calories are too low, your meals are poorly balanced and you are constantly hungry, the chances of maintaining that diet for months are very small.

That is why I always look beyond calories alone.

Your Calorie Deficit Needs to Be Sustainable

Protein, carbohydrates, fats and fibre all have an important role in your diet.

The goal is to create a calorie deficit while still giving your body enough food and nutrients to function properly, train well and feel satisfied.

You could technically create a calorie deficit with a very poor diet and still lose weight.

But that does not mean it is a good approach.

A properly structured diet should help you control hunger, maintain muscle and give you enough energy to continue following the plan.

The best diet is not the most extreme one. It is the one you can actually stick to.

Stop Trying to Change Everything in Two Weeks

One of the biggest mistakes I see is people going from one extreme to another.

They suddenly cut their calories massively, remove all the foods they enjoy and start training almost every day.

For two weeks, everything looks perfect.

Then they are exhausted, hungry and fed up with the whole process.

And they stop.

That is not a lack of discipline. The plan itself was never realistic enough to maintain.

Weight loss does not need to be a punishment.

You need a system you can continue following for long enough to actually reach your goal.

Nutrition Will Drive Your Weight Loss, but Training Still Matters

For fat loss, nutrition is where most of the result is controlled.

But training is still extremely important.

You do not just want the number on the scale to go down. You want to maintain muscle and improve how your body looks as you lose weight.

For most people, three strength-training sessions per week can be more than enough.

I prefer setting up those sessions so the whole body is trained across the week rather than simply repeating the same full-body workout three times.

You do not need to live in the gym.

You need good training, progression and consistency.

What If Your Weight Stops Moving?

A weight-loss plateau is completely normal.

Your weight may stay around the same number for a week, two weeks or sometimes longer.

Do not immediately panic and completely change the plan.

First look at your progress.

How much weight have you already lost? Are you still following the plan properly? Has your activity changed? Does your calorie intake need adjusting?

Sometimes a small adjustment is needed.

Sometimes you simply need to stay consistent for a little longer.

I see periods like this during transformations all the time. The important thing is not giving up because the scale stopped moving for a few days.

Losing the Weight Is Only Stage One

This is the part people often forget.

Losing weight is the first stage. Learning how to maintain your new body is the second and arguably the most important.

This is why I do not believe in building a weight-loss plan around training seven days a week and eating an extremely restrictive diet.

What happens when the diet finishes?

If the system only works while your entire life revolves around losing weight, it was never a good long-term system.

You need to learn how to eat at maintenance, manage your portions, keep good habits and still enjoy your life.

That includes being able to eat foods you enjoy.

You should not reach your goal weight and think that you can never have your favourite foods again.

The goal is to build a system where you understand how to balance them while maintaining the result you worked for.

That is what long-term success looks like.
